Untitled Performance
Performance, KTO Theatre, Kraków 2024

My performance was inspired, on one hand, by Tadeusz Kantor's theatrical masterpiece "The Dead Class", and on the other, by peculiar memories from my primary school years. A key prop used in the performance was a wooden conference chair with a writing desk attachment, which, much like the school benches in Kantor's play, symbolised the classroom — a space of order, discipline, and education. This sense of space was further defined by use of a school uniform as my performative attire. Disrupting this symbolic order was the act of persistently chewing gum throughout the performance. I then adhered the gum to the desk surface of the conference chair, a gesture that resulted in the creation of an autonomous artistic object. This piece served as both a documentation of the action and an evocation of a forgotten gesture of defiance, a lack of decorum, and even youthful rebellion.
